'Antisocial magnet' viewed as culturally important

PLANS to flatten an old handball alley in Tuam which has been associated with teen drinking and anti-social behaviour have been turned down by Galway County Council.

The outdoor concrete handball court dates back to the 1950s and St Jarlath’s College had hoped to knock it and replace it with a new much-needed building catering for construction studies.
However, an objection to the proposal was raised with planners by the Council’s Architectural Conservation Officer who feels the alley is of cultural importance.
