Shake-up for Galway Football Championships
THE GALWAY Senior and Intermediate Football Championships will undergo a radical shake-up this year, with the introduction of a new group format plus an increased number of teams being relegated in both competitions.
The changes are the result of a recommendation from the Football Sub-Committee to reduce the number of senior teams in the county from 20 to 18. The proposal went before the Galway Competitions Control Committee (CCC) and subsequently received the green light at Connacht level before being confirmed to club delegates.
The draws will take place at the Claregalway Hotel on Thursday, February 22.
First round matches have been pencilled for May 19-20, the weekend after Galway meet Mayo in the Connacht SFC quarter-final.
Meanwhile, the Galway U-21 Football Championships are no more and in line the age grade changes at inter-county level, an U-20 competition will be run off on a straight knockout basis.
