Tally added to Galway backroom
GALWAY senior football manager Kevin Walsh has added Sigerson Cup winner Paddy Tally to his coaching team ahead of the new season.
The Tyrone native, a senior lecturer in PE at St Mary's in Belfast, guided the college to success in third-level football's most prestigious competition last March, and has built extensive experience in training and coaching on the inter-county scene over the past 15 years.
Tally was part of Mickey Harte's backroom in 2003 and '04 as trainer of a star-studded Tyrone side that made their historic All-Ireland breakthrough.
The Galbally clubman was also a member of James McCartan's management team when Down reached the 2010 All-Ireland final, losing out to Cork by one point, and also in Brian McIvor's Derry set-up during his stint with the Oakleafers between 2013 and '15.
Tally's most notable recent achievement, however, came as manager of the Falls Road teacher training college. Despite a student population in the region of 1,000, 'the Ranch' grabbed plenty of headlines with against-the-odds victories over DCU and UCC before they pipped the John Divilly-managed UCD in the final. That was St Mary's first Sigerson title since 1989 and it's understood that Tally will combine his role as manager of the college along with his coaching commitments with Galway.
Both Brian Silke and Sean Conlon remain in situ as Walsh's selectors for a fourth season in Galway, while the Killannin clubman has added Keith Carr as his new strength and conditioning coach.
