Flatley gives Williamstown the edge in epic battle of endurance
By Pádraic Ó Ciardha
At Pearse Stadium
FEW who attended the drawn game between these two sides could have expected last Sunday’s contest to offer the same level of excitement and intensity but, not only were those levels matched in Pearse Stadium, they were exceeded.
As the clock ticked into injury-time in extra-time, the sides were level. After over 140 minutes of play over the course of two games they still couldn’t separated but when Williamstown were given the chance to finally book a place in this year’s Intermediate Football final, they took it.
Kieren Flatley delivered a couple of outstanding long-range points in the drawn game and he produced the goods again when it was needed most, sailing a 45 straight between the posts with time all but expired.
The final whistle sparked scenes of huge emotion amongst the Williamstown team and support, in relief as much as anything, at finally having gotten past hugely courageous opponents.
