Call to revive plans for Claregalway bypass

THERE has been a call to put the proposed Claregalway bypass back on the drawing board after early figures indicate the new motorway has had little impact on peak time congestion travelling through the village.

A bypass of Claregalway dates back more than a decade but the idea was put on hold with successive governments stating that the traffic bottlenecks would be eased by the M17-M18.
However, while the motorway has led to a reduction in the number of cars going through Claregalway on a daily basis, the numbers at peak times in the morning and evenings haven't fallen significantly.
