Senior Football Championship reaches business end

THE PENULTIMATE STAGE of the Galway Senior Football Championship is the highlight of the sporting action occurring across the county this weekend.

Mountbellew-Moylough face off with Monivea-Abbey in the first of a Tuam Stadium treble-header on Sunday. That has a 2pm throw-in time, while the game that is perhaps capturing more of the Galway public’s imagination is the meeting of Corofin and Annaghdown.
Mountbellew-Moylough have recovered from their loss to Annaghdown, and have subsequently taken care of Milltown and St James’ by a combined total of 31 points. They will go into their semi-final as heavy favourites to reach a second final in three years. Though 2016 intermediate champions Monivea-Abbey are in bonus territory following their stirring quarter-final victory over Tuam Stars, they will still be no pushovers.
Although Salthill-Knocknacarra pushed Corofin close, many feel that Annaghdown have looked the side most likely to challenge Corofin’s drive for five this year. They easily managed their 12-week lay-off from their win over Mountbellew-Moylough to the quarter-final game with Leitir Mór, and with Frankie Burke in the form of his life, Annaghdown may well Corofin a good run for their money.
