Housing shortage in Tuam may get worse if house prices increase

SOURCING accommodation is the biggest issue affecting people in the Tuam area, according to a local councillor.
Up to 600 people are on the housing waiting list in the Tuam urban and rural areas, though some of that number are already in private rental accommodation receiving Housing Assistance Payment (HAP).
Councillor Donagh Killilea said he fields calls dealing with private and public housing queries and complaints “eight days of the weekâ€.
The latest figures from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) show that the average monthly rent in the Tuam area for the first quarter of 2017 was €611 but prices in the town itself are much higher than that, according to Cllr Killilea.
