Tuam might yet get Town Council back
TOWNS such as Tuam which lost their own elected bodies during the last tranche of local government reform could yet see the return of the Mayoral chain and an elected body to represent their citizens.
This scenario may unfold if Leo Varadkar wins the Fine Gael leadership contest and becomes the next Taoiseach, for he has included in his campaign manifesto a commitment to hold local plebiscites, if demanded, and let people decide if they want their Town Council back or if people who never had one, want one now.
The last Mayor of Tuam Imelda Kelly, daughter of Town Council stalwart for many years the late Miko Kelly, said she would be 100 per cent behind a plebiscite on the restoration of the body and was confident it would be carried easily.
She said Tuam was the poorer for the passing of its elected body.
