Saviour sites
EVERY farmer should be allowed to sell one site. This was the call made by a Councillor when Galway Co Council debated ways to entice young couple to remain in rural communities and to stem the drift to the towns and cities.
Cllr Michael Fahy said that strict planning regulations and the lack of sites meant that young couples could not settle in their home areas and were leaving for more urban ones.
He argued that keeping young families would also mean the saving of rural Post Offices, schools and other services and it was a simple solution to the depopulation of rural Galway as shown in the latest census figures.
