Grove plan heads to Bord Pleanála amid burial claims
PLANS to transform the old Grove hospital once owned by the Bon Secours nuns in Tuam are en route to An Bord Pleanala amid concerns regarding the possible burial of babies nearby.
The HSE proposes to transform the dilapidated hospital building into a new Community Mental Health campus but there are fears that the development may interfere with possible human remains on adjoining land.
Oranmore resident Noreen Meehan believes her baby brother is buried in an unofficial angels plot to the rear of the hospital, near to where Bon Secours nuns were once buried. The nuns’ bodies were exhumed and reintered shortly after the property was purchased by the HSE (Western Health Board) in 2001.
An appeal, on behalf of Mrs Meehan and other relatives of those believed to buried there, is being lodged this week against Galway County Council’s decision to grant permission for the HSE development.
