Playground can't be ignored in burial site probe

THE houses standing on part of the site of the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home weren’t built on top of graves.
That’s the strong view of Brownsgrove historian Catherine Corless who was responding to concerns expressed about bodies buried under existing houses on the Dublin Road.

The Council also confirmed to The Tuam Herald that “there is no record of any remains being found during the construction of the estates”. All of the local authority’s files relating to the building of the houses on the site of the Home have been reviewed in detail and all records and files held by the Council have been made available to the Commission of Investigation.

While Catherine doesn’t believe the houses are over burial sites, she is equally adamant that the playground, in the centre of the estate, must now be the next site to be properly investigated.
