First half goals help Pres past Mercy in historic Tuam derby
IT WAS like old times at Tuam Stadium on Friday.
Down through the years, St Jarlath’s and Tuam CBS (later St Patrick’s) played out epic battles that went down in both the stadium’s and Connacht Colleges Senior Championship’s rich folklore.
Sadly those days are no more, of course, but the atmosphere and sense of occasion that the town’s two girls’ schools, Presentation Currylea and Scoil Bhríde, Mercy, and the armies of supporters they brought to the old ground was equally special. The stand was heaving, the decibel levels high and the standard of the football lived up to it all. And when Garryowen McMahon called time on a thrilling match that went right to the wire, Pres had come away with their eighth senior title and first since 2010.
