Fresher Corofin set up Brigid's decider
IT TOOK 80-plus energy-sapping minutes to produce a winner in a dramatic Connacht Club Senior Football Championship semi-final on Sunday, but in the end Corofin emerged, and deservedly so, against Castlebar for the first time in three clashes.
A provincial final meeting awaits in Carrick-on-Shannon against St Brigid’s of Roscommon, who like Mitchels did, hold the upper hand against them in previous battles.
Connacht finals are nothing new for Kevin O’Brien but the Corofin manager will break fresh ground when he leads the club for the first time against their old rivals. When reflecting on events at MacHale Park, O’Brien identified his team’s character as key to victory.
“At one stage near the end of normal time they went a point up,” said O’Brien. “It would have been easy for our lads to throw in the towel at that stage and start thinking about what happened in the past. But they’re a very positive group and stood up to the challenge, which was very impressive.”
