Corofin set to dominate final

THE ODDS at the outset suggested this year’s Galway Senior Football Championship was Corofin’s to lose and that stance has so far proved on the mark as potential challengers have fallen away and the title holders arrive into Sunday’s county final with Salthill-Knocknacarra as the hottest of favourites.
Recent form favours them. They’ve had the tougher run, too. Tuam Stars and Mountbellew-Moylough were most people’s 'next in line’ but both came up well short at the quarter- and semi-final stage, respectively. Some of the pace and quality of Corofin’s football against Mountbellew-Moylough was reminiscent of what carried them to an All-Ireland more than 18 months ago.
In Kieran Fitzgerald, Ciaran McGrath, the Silkes, Ronan Steede, Michael Farragher, Daithí Burke, Gary Sice and Ian Burke, they’ve a core of superb footballers. Of the newcomers to the side this year, if you could call them that, Bernard Power is the current Galway ’keeper, while Kieran Molloy has two seasons of inter-county U-21 football under his belt. Then there’s Micheál Lundy to come off a well-stocked bench.
Corofin overcame Cárna-Caiseal and Milltown before a long lead in to a preliminary quarter-final with An Cheathrú Rua, a time when they were welcoming back players from the United States and struggling with injuries.
