Restored Tuam 1916 monument to be unveiled

TUAM’S monument commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising in 1966 is to be restored to its former glory and have an new plaque marking the centenary put in place.
The monument was vandalised in the1970s but thanks to a local initiative it is now being restored and updated. Final preparations are currently being put in place for the unveiling.
The monument will be the location of a Co Council-supported and Old Tuam Society arranged ceremony on April 24 – the actual date of the start of the1916 Rising.
At a recent ceremony at the same location attended by the grandson of 1916 leader Eamon de Valera, Eamon ” Cuiv TD on March 18, former TD, Minister and MEP Mark Killilea called on those who were responsible for defacing the monument to return the missing bronze numerals.
