Experimental Galway make positive start to new season
EARLY January is never a time to draw many definitive conclusions but as season openers go Sunday’s three-point win over Sligo still ticked plenty of boxes from a Galway perspective.
First and foremost there was a positive result and it provided a valuable run out for a handful of regulars, while a host of newcomers put their best foot forward in their first taste of senior inter-county action.
Goals in either half, Damien Comer and Enda Tierney the scorers, proved the difference for Galway in what turned into a reasonably entertaining contest for the time of year, especially given the heavy underfoot conditions that threatened the fixture early that morning.
Galway’s lead was never seriously threatened once Comer found the net early on and it’s probable that Leitrim, on the back of their rout of GMIT, will ask more searching questions when they come to Tuam Stadium on Sunday.
