Tuams wool trade making its way in a volatile global market
MANKIND has been shearing sheep ever since the animals were first domesticated about 10,000 years ago. It’s not known whether the Browne family of Tuam are in the trade that long but they certainly have a lengthy tradition in the wool business.
The Herald paid a recent visit to Alan Browne who manages Connacht Wool Tuam Ltd, based at Airglooney in Tuam, at the height of their busiest period to see how things are faring after a difficult few years for the industry.
Alan, who has seen good times and bad in the trade, was happy that for the first time in ages, all last year’s stock had been cleared from their stores on the old Sugar Factory site before they started filling it up again this season. This is a good sign, he says, which bodes well for the future.
