Collapsing line puts future use of tuam rail at risk
THE collapse of an embankment along a section of the Tuam to Athenry railway line has been branded 'disturbing’ after it was confirmed the matter is the subject of enforcement proceedings by Galway County Council.
The section of the railway track at Cloonascragh has been affected by the alleged unauthorised extraction of peat from the bog adjacent to the line over recent years.
This has led to the area beneath the track to erode, causing the embankment to collapse in places.
The damage has sparked concern from those campaigning for the rail line to be developed as a Greenway route.
