Galway make it two out of two against a strong leitrim

GALWAY footballers duly made it two wins out of two in the FBD Insurance Connacht League by edging out the home side on the day that the Mohill ground — formerly known as St. Manchán’s Park — was officially renamed the Philly McGuinness Memorial Park in honour of the talented young local footballer who received a fatal injury while playing for his club in 2010.
GAA President-elect Aogán ” Fearghail was present for the occasion as were several provincial and national dignitaries and a fine crowd of about 1,300 spectators created a good, lively atmosphere in a scenic location as the Leitrim side tried to maintain their recent impressive record against Galway, which had started to become a mini-hoodoo.
Last year they beat us at three different levels, Senior, Under-21 and Junior, while their seniors won the FBD Cup for the second year in succession, their minors won the Connacht League and their juniors narrowly lost the provincial final to Sligo. They had a huge win over GMIT last weekend so there is certainly a growing confidence in the county.
As expected their current side, which is now managed by Donegal man Shane Ward, put in a huge physical effort and pushed an experimental Galway all the way.
