Dancehall book is too dublinish
WHILE it is a trip down memory lane for some of us to leaf through the pages of excellent black and white photographs in the coffee table style book Dancehall Days, the downside for many of us from the country is that many of the photos, and certainly most of the settings are too Dublin ... ish.
Of course it is rightly pointed out in the early pages that most of these iconic photos from the 1960s were taken in Dublin by top photographer Michael O’Reilly, the man behind this project. While that is fine, it would have been nice to see a few more bands from towns such as Tuam, which was the hub of the showband industry for many years.
In fact there is only one Tuam band accorded the honour of a full page in Dancehall Days and that is the Ollie Maloney Showband. There were other towns around Ireland too that I am sure will feel under-represented, but no doubt Michael O’Reilly can say that was the way it was and the bands that played a lot in Dublin or appeared on Ireland’s only national TV channel, RTE, or Radio Eireann at the time were best positioned to be captured by his lens.
