Portumna will meet gort in hurling final
AFTER a troubled period off the field in Galway hurling, the way is finally cleared for the senior county final and Portumna, who have been waiting for what seems like an eternity to find out who their opponents will be in the decider, now know that it will be Gort after they overcame Beagh in their semi-final clash at Kenny Park, Athenry last Sunday.
County and All-Ireland champions Portumna, who have been living dangerously in their past couple of games against Loughrea and Craughwell before eventually getting through, will be putting their titles on the line at the same venue on Sunday, December 14 with Christy Brown as referee.
The battle between South Galway neighbours Gort and Beagh for the right to meet them and do battle for the Tom Callanan Cup went the way of the former after a convincing performance that saw them storm to a 1-15 to 0-10 victory which edges the senior championship a bit closer to completion.
The Hurling Committee of the County Board will certainly be very relieved as there was a real threat for a while that the biggest game in their flagship competition might not take place in the calendar year that it started in due to the objection by Beagh to a Turloughmore player in the side that beat them in their group game several weeks ago.
