Galway side wins tussle of the islands
One of the most novel pairings ever in Connacht football saw the teams of Galway and Mayo islands clash in the provincial decider of the AIB Junior Club Championship at a sunny Tuam Stadium last Sunday in front of a huge crowd.
A double-scores win sounds like an easy one but the score-line doesn’t do justice to the efforts of the gallant Achill lads who more than contributed to a fine sporting occasion and it was only in the final quarter that the Galway islands pulled away to win convincingly with a string of points that stretched the lead to impressive proportions.
It was also double scores at half-time when the Aran side led 0-8 to 0-4 but when their Mayo opponents stormed out of the blocks after the break and immediately halved the deficit with two fine points, it looked as if we were in for a really close contest from there to the finish.
However they were unable to maintain that pace and before long it was obvious that the men of Oileáin Árainn were too good for them.
Nevertheless, Achill kept going to the finish and were out of luck when Denis McNamara’s flick went the wrong side of a post with the score at 0-13 to 0-7 with a quarter of an hour remaining. Had they got a goal then they would really have been back in contention and anything could have happened but overall they lacked the sharpness and scoring ability of their opponents.
