Allireland masters over 40 football threeinarow glory for galway
IGNORE that scoreline! This was a much better, more entertaining, more fiercely contested game of football than seven points to six would suggest if you hadn’t known all about the non-stop excitement of the closing stages of the national over-40s final at Clonberne Sportsfield last Saturday.
Historic too, with Galway clinching the Three-in-a-Row after defeating Cavan in the 2012 final and Tyrone last year.
It was an absorbing encounter for all present and all who watched the live television coverage of the two Masters finals (Cup and Shield) on Irish TV (based in Co. Mayo and on the Sky network), with commentary by the Galway Bay fm Head of Sport, Ollie Turner.
Unfortunately, the bad weather of last weekend kept the attendance down; it was cold, wet and windy all day, but for the main event it was wonderful to see the Clonberne Stand filling up. It was packed sardine-tin tight by the time Sligo referee John Griffin threw in the ball for the latest chapter in a Gaelic football story nearly as old as the GAA itself — Galway vs Mayo.
Even in the driving rain, you could feel the atmosphere. We all stopped complaining about the bad weather!
