AFTER 17 years waiting, Tuam's Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha will finally get its purpose-built school.
Planning permission has been granted for the two-storey development on a site at Vicars Choroland close to the town centre.
The primary school which started out with 13 pupils at a temporary premises in the Tuam Community Centre in 1996 has grown to 190 pupils.
A purpose built school has a long been campaigned for by staff and parents but despite a number of false hopes over the past ten years, nothing has come to fruition.
Galway Co Council has this week granted permission for the 12-classroom development. Construction on the new building is expected to begin early next year and it could be up and running before the end of 2015.
