More students choose to stay at home as college costs soar
THERE may be more stay at home students across North Galway this September as they are close enough to commute to colleges in the city where the cost of accommodation, and the lack of it, are now a problem for many and for their parents.
Declan Higgins, President of the Students’ Union at NUIG, says that, apart from the cost saving aspect of commuting to and from the Galway colleges, students “simply can’t get accommodation” this year.
“Anyone with a reasonable chance of commuting will be doing so this year, be it from Tuam, Gort, Athenry or other areas that are reasonably near to the city,” he says.
