New young blood joins some familiar faces on Tuam’s new municipal district
THERE’S been a partial changing of the guard within Tuam’s elected representatives on Galway County Council, as the big hitters of local government have held on to their seats for another five years.
Four independent, three Fine Gael and two Fianna Fail councillors make up the new Tuam Municipal District, which is expected to hold its first official meeting next week.
Poll topper for the second successive local election Sean Canney (Ind) was joined by returning councillors Pete Roche (FG) and Mary Hoade (FF), but it was the impressive first effort of Glinsk’s Michael Fitzmaurice (Ind) that caused the most raucous cheers as all four were elected at the first count.
Tom McHugh (FG) booked his place in the council chamber following the third count, with the distribution of party colleague Pete Roche’s surplus.
The youngest recruit for the area, 24-year-old Cllr Karey McHugh (Ind) was elected on the eighth count and said one of her priorities would be tackling the issue of unfinished estates throughout the region.
She said she was confident all nine members would unite to deliver the best for the Tuam region.
