Tom McHugh takes fifth seat in Tuam
The third count saw the distribution of FG Pete Roche's surplus and this has resulted in the election of FG Tom McHugh who comfortably retained his seat.
The surplus from Independent candidate Michael Fitzmaurice will now be distributed and it's hard to predict where these will go. It's understood that many of Fitzmaurice's voters only put No 1 on the ballot paper and while some will remain in the local area, benefitting Fahy and Keaveney, the turf cutter campaigner harnessed support across the district and so other candidates could benefit also.
FG Peter Keaveney did not get the expected boost from Roche's surplus and FF Eamonn Kitt actually gained more in the third count and can't be completely ruled out.
