Barnaderg Post Office campaign turns up the heat
PUBLIC frustration at the lack of a decision on the future of Barnaderg Post Office has led to an invitation to the Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, to attend a public meeting in the village the week after next.
An action group, established by Killererin Community Council to fight the proposed closure of the post office earlier this year, is convening a second public meeting, to which all those standing in this month’s local and European elections are also invited.
The future of the village post office was thrown into doubt in January, following the death of postmaster Sean Fahy. His daughter Annette was appointed temporary postmistress while a three week community consultation process was conducted by An Post.
However, the outcome of this process has not yet been announced, despite a commitment by senior officials from An Post that a decision would be made within ten days of the closing date for submissions in mid February.
Chair of the action group Bernard Keeley said people were entitled to know what was going to happen to the post office.
'A public meeting is being convened with a view to compelling An Post to clarify their position with regard to the future of Barnaderg Post Office,' he said.
