Galway footballers survive in Division 2 despite winning only two League games
DONEGAL defeating Armagh was a great 'win' for Galway in Division Two of the Allianz National Football League last Sunday.
It simply meant that Galway’s Round 6 good result from their home clash with Armagh a week earlier was enough to ensure second division survival for Alan Mulholland’s team. By the time the concluding round was played, Galway and Armagh were tied together on five points but the ‘head-to-head’ outcome at Tuam Stadium on March 30th saved Galway and left Armagh relegated, along with Louth, who finished their campaign with only two League points.
So, as it turned out, it didn’t matter who won or lost at St Tiernach’s Park, Clones on Sunday but we still got a well contested, very entertaining game, played in great weather at one of the best GAA venues in the whole country.
There was a superb atmosphere in the Stand, made even more exciting for many spectators from both counties who got to meet the veteran Country music superstar Big Tom McBride who loves watching his native Monaghan play; indeed he wore the county jersey with pride and distinction for several years in the late 1950s.
