€100,000 for Tuam's Mill Museum

PLANS for the refurbishment of the Miller's House at Tuam's Mill Museum at Chapel Lane have got a major boost with the announcement that Galway Co Council will sign contracts to approve €100,000 towards its refurbishment tomorrow (Thursday). When the work is completed it is hoped the building will re-open as a public space for artistic and cultural activities by various community groups. Cllr Sean Canney says he has been working with members of the Mill Museum committee for the past three or four years in trying to secure funding and he is delighted that the Co Council are now approving €100,000 for the work. 'The work will include refurbishment of the building, the provision of toilets for the disabled, a new heating system and the insulation of the whole building,'says Cllr Canney.[private] It is significant that the contract for the refurbishment is being signed now as this year marks the 400th anniversary of Tuam getting its charter. The offices of the Corrib Country organisation were located at the Mill Museum for 22 years until two years ago when it moved to temporary premises in The Square. Last year Teresa Burke of Corrib Country, the local tourism promotion body, said they hope to move back into the Mill Museum building as soon as the refurbishment is completed.
